FUTURE OF COMMERCIAL STREETSCAPES
Studio during ERASMUS+ in Brussels
2019
supervisor: Hannes Van Damme
During one semester in Belgium I spent some time analysing commercial spaces on shopping strip full of big-box stores in Roeselare. Important part was research about retail in general and the possible future of brick-and-mortar stores in current digital age. Traffic and walkability were also key topics while creating urban plan for the whole area alongside Brugsesteenweg. So what is the future of retail areas like this ? Changes in customers behaviour are clear, increase of online shopping can not be stopped and stores need to adapt. For this area to be attractive and profitable it needs not only to offer various programs but also be available for cars, cyclist and pedestrians. The proposal is divided into 4 phases. Each one is adding new buildings in different sizes and new programs to create continuoes transition between retail and residential area.
